Position Title: Traffic Control Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Public Construction Reports to: Superintendent/Foreman
Salary Level: Commensurate upon experience Location: Wichita, KS

 

Summary:

We are seeking a safety-focused Traffic Control Technician to be responsible for setting up, maintaining, and removing traffic control devices and systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow around construction zones or other situations requiring traffic management. This position requires a strong dedication to safety, teamwork, and professionalism. The Traffic Control Technician will perform a variety of tasks that require adherence to safety procedures, clear communication, and the ability to work in various weather conditions and traffic environments.  This position works collaboratively with the team to minimize downtime and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up traffic signs, cones, barrels, barricades, and other equipment according to traffic control plans and safety regulations.
  • Inspect and maintain traffic control setups, ensuring devices remain functional, visible, and properly placed throughout the duration of a project.
  • Act as a flagger when needed, using hand signals, signs, or flags to safely direct vehicles and pedestrians through or around work zones.
  • Observe traffic flow and work zone activities to identify and address potential safety hazards or inefficiencies.
  • Adhere to safety standards and protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring all traffic control setups meet regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with construction crews, supervisors, and other technicians to align traffic control measures with project timelines and needs.
  • Dismantle and remove traffic control devices upon project completion, ensuring the roadway is restored to normal conditions.
  • Document and report any incidents, equipment damage, or safety concerns to supervisors.
  • Clean, store, and perform basic maintenance on traffic control devices and tools to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Follow safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Adhere to OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Report hazards or unsafe conditions to supervisors immediately.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Some travel might be expected with this position.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

 Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in traffic control, construction, or a related field is a plus but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Willingness to work in various outdoor conditions and travel to job sites as needed.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
  • Reliable transportation required.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to airborne particles.  The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
