Position Title: Quality Control Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary:
We are seeking a Quality Control Technician to join our team. The Quality Control (QC) Technician is responsible for ensuring that all concrete and asphalt materials, mixes, and placement operations meet or exceed project specifications, industry standards, and state/federal requirements. This role involves field and laboratory testing, sampling, inspection, documentation, and collaboration with production, paving crews, and project teams to maintain high-quality standards in asphalt paving, concrete work, and related construction activities. Some travel is required for this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform sampling, testing, and inspection of raw materials (aggregates, cement, asphalt binders, admixtures) and finished products (hot mix asphalt, concrete mixes) at plants, stockpiles, and job sites.
  • Conduct standard field and laboratory tests including but not limited to:
    • Asphalt: Gradation, asphalt content, density (nuclear gauge), temperature monitoring, compaction testing, and mix adjustments.
    • Concrete: Slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, cylinder/beam sampling and curing, and compressive/flexural strength testing.
    • Soils/aggregates: Moisture content, gradation, and other required material properties.
  • Monitor production and paving operations in real-time to ensure compliance with mix designs, placement procedures, and specifications.
  • Document all test results, inspections, and corrective actions accurately and in a timely manner; maintain daily QC reports and records for project submittals and audits.
  • Identify quality issues, communicate findings to foremen, superintendents, project managers, and suppliers, and recommend adjustments to mixes or processes.
  • Assist in developing and implementing Quality Control Plans for projects.
  • Calibrate and maintain testing equipment; ensure lab and field tools are in proper working condition.
  • Verify that materials and work comply with state DOT, AASHTO, ASTM, and project-specific requirements.
  • Participate in mix design verification and adjustments as needed.
  • Travel to various project sites as required; may include overnight stays for larger highway projects.
  • Report to assigned job area in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in policies and procedures manual, and OSHA and MSHA guidelines.
  • Desire to learn and commitment to working safely.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Travel is expected with this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • ACI Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
  • Aggregate, Asphalt, and/or Concrete certifications from relevant sate DOT (e.g., KDOT, etc.)
  • 1–3 years of experience in ready mix concrete testing or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of ASTM, ACI, and DOT testing procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and specifications.
  • Proficient in basic math and computer skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Willingness to work in various outdoor conditions and travel to job sites as needed.
  • Previous experience in construction or heavy equipment operation is a plus.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to use hand/power tools.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to airborne particles. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
